Why visit Guba & Shahdag?
The Guba region is where Azerbaijan's mountains become genuinely dramatic. While Gabala offers resort-style mountain scenery, Guba and the Shahdag range deliver raw Caucasian altitude — peaks above 4,000 metres, ancient villages clinging to ridgelines, gorges cut hundreds of metres deep, and some of the wildest landscapes anywhere between the Black Sea and the Caspian.
The Shahdag Mountain Resort, built to international standards, has transformed the region into Azerbaijan's premier ski destination. Modern gondolas, 19km of pistes across all skill levels, and slope-side hotels make this a genuine competitor to ski resorts across the region. In summer the same infrastructure serves trekkers and mountain bikers exploring routes through the high alpine.
But Guba's most extraordinary offer is not the resort — it is Khinalig. At 2,350 metres, this ancient village is home to around 2,000 people who speak Khinalig, a language unrelated to any other language on earth. The village has been inhabited continuously for over 5,000 years. Reaching it requires a 90-minute mountain drive on a track that crosses three rivers — and arriving there feels genuinely like stepping into another time.
Top things to do in Guba & Shahdag
Two seasons, two completely different destinations — both extraordinary.
Shahdag Mountain Resort — skiing & snowboarding
Azerbaijan's flagship ski destination. 19km of groomed runs, a modern gondola system, and a fully equipped resort base — restaurants, equipment hire, ski schools, and slope-side accommodation. Runs range from gentle beginner slopes to challenging black runs at altitude. The resort operates from approximately December to early April, with snowmaking facilities extending the season. Night skiing is available on selected runs.

No travel experience in Azerbaijan compares to Khinalig. At 2,350 metres, this stone village of 2,000 people has been inhabited for over 5,000 years. The Khinalig language is spoken only here — entirely unrelated to Azerbaijani, Russian, Armenian, Georgian, or any other known language. The drive up (90 minutes on a mountain track crossing three rivers) is itself spectacular. The village, its ancient mosque, and the views across the Greater Caucasus are unforgettable.

The Afurja waterfall plunges 75 metres through a narrow basalt gorge — Azerbaijan's highest waterfall and one of its most dramatic natural sights. The 3km hike to reach it follows a river canyon through dense forest, crossing wooden bridges and passing smaller cascades along the way. Best visited in spring and early summer when snowmelt maximises the flow. The misty basin at the base is memorably atmospheric.

Directly across the Qudialçay river from Guba town sits Krasnaya Sloboda — one of only two entirely Jewish towns outside Israel, and the only one in the former Soviet Union. Home to the Mountain Jews (Juhuro), a community who have lived in the Caucasus for over 2,000 years. The town's ornate synagogues, distinct architecture, and living culture make this one of Azerbaijan's most unusual and moving experiences.

Guba is renowned across Azerbaijan for its pomegranates, considered the finest in the country. In October, the orchards around the town turn deep crimson with ripening fruit, and the annual Pomegranate Festival transforms Guba into a celebration of food, music, and culture. Even outside the festival, visiting a family orchard and tasting fresh pomegranate juice straight from the press is one of those simple, perfect travel experiences.
