"Khinalig was the moment I stopped thinking about Azerbaijan as a destination and started thinking of it as something genuinely rare. 5,000 years of continuous habitation, a language no one else speaks. I wept a little, honestly."

Dr. Claire F. — Oxford, UK · May 2025
★★★★★

"We have done 30+ countries. This was our most memorable trip. The range — from Baku's Zaha Hadid buildings to a mud-volcano moonscape to a Zoroastrian fire temple to a mountain village that predates Rome — is genuinely extraordinary."

Robert & Diana M. — Sydney, Australia · September 2025
★★★★★

"Our guide was phenomenal — 20 years of Azerbaijani history in his memory. He knew every family in Khinalig, every story behind every stone in the Old City. The 14 days flew. We are already planning to return."

Nasser Al-K. — Kuwait City · October 2025

Frequently asked questions

What makes the Grand Tour different from the 7-day tour?+
The Grand Tour adds three things the 7-day cannot: the Guba region and Shahdag mountains, the extraordinary Khinalig village (5,000+ years inhabited, its own unique language), and Afurja waterfall (Azerbaijan's tallest). It also allows a slower, more immersive pace — an extra night in Shaki, more time in Gabala for hiking, and a full ski or mountain day at Shahdag. For travellers who want Azerbaijan whole, this is the tour.
Can the Grand Tour be shortened to 10 days?+
Yes — we offer 10, 11, 12, 13, or 14-day versions. The 10-day version keeps all six regions at a brisker pace. The 14-day version allows an extra night in Shaki and more time at Shahdag. Tell us your preference when you request a quote and we build the exact version for you.
What is Khinalig and why is it so special?+
Khinalig is a mountain village at 2,350m altitude — one of the highest permanently inhabited settlements in the Caucasus. Its 2,000 residents speak Khinalig, a language unrelated to any other language on earth, spoken only here. The village has been continuously inhabited for over 5,000 years. Reaching it requires a dramatic 90-minute mountain drive crossing three rivers. For many guests it is the most extraordinary experience of the entire trip.
Is this tour suitable for older travellers?+
Yes — we customise pace and physical requirements. The Khinalig road and hiking trails can be adjusted for accessibility. We have guided guests in their 70s and 80s on the full tour with appropriate pacing. Tell us about any mobility considerations and we plan accordingly.
What is the best time of year?+
May–June (spring — lush landscapes, waterfalls at full flow, mild temperatures) and September–October (autumn — golden forests, cool mountain air, fewer crowds) are ideal. Summer works well in the mountains. Winter is perfect for those who want to ski Shahdag — we adjust the itinerary accordingly.
