Best time to visit Azerbaijan — month by month guide

By Take Me To Azerbaijan ·June 1, 2026 ·7 min read
Short answer: The best time to visit Azerbaijan is spring (April–June) or autumn (September–October). Spring brings mild weather, green landscapes, and the Novruz festival. Autumn brings golden forests, harvest celebrations, and comfortable temperatures. Summer is excellent for mountains; winter for skiing.

Quick overview by season

Azerbaijan is a surprisingly diverse country climatically — the coastal Caspian city of Baku experiences semi-arid summers and mild winters, while the Caucasus mountains of Gabala and Guba have proper alpine conditions including heavy snowfall. This means the "best time" depends significantly on which parts of Azerbaijan you plan to visit.

Best time by activity

🏛️ Baku sightseeing and city breaks

The ideal months for a Baku city break are April–June and September–October. Temperatures are comfortable (18–27°C), outdoor walking is pleasant, and the city's squares and parks are at their best. The Flame Towers and waterfront are beautiful year-round, but the golden afternoon light of autumn October makes for the best photography. Winter (December–February) is also viable — far fewer tourists, cheaper hotels, and Baku's mild temperatures make outdoor sightseeing comfortable.

🏔️ Hiking in Gabala and the Caucasus

The Caucasus mountain trails are best from May to October. May and June offer the freshest green landscapes and the highest waterfalls (from snowmelt). July and August are popular but warm. September and October are superb for hiking — cool temperatures, golden forest colours, and dramatically lower crowds than summer.

Waterfall tip: Gabala's Yeddi Gozel (Seven Beauties) waterfall is most powerful and spectacular in May–June, when snowmelt feeds the cascade to maximum flow. By August it can be significantly reduced.

⛷️ Skiing at Shahdag

Shahdag Mountain Resort's ski season runs approximately December to late March, with snowfall sometimes extending into April. The resort's altitude (1,400–2,400m) and snowmaking facilities provide reliable coverage throughout the season. February tends to have the most consistent snow conditions and is widely considered peak ski month.

🍂 Autumn in Shaki and the forests

October is the single best month to visit Shaki and the northwest Caucasus forested regions. The beech and hornbeam forests around Shaki, Gabala, and Guba turn deep gold, amber, and crimson — photography conditions are extraordinary. The Guba Pomegranate Festival (typically mid-October) coincides perfectly.

Key events and festivals

  • Novruz (Spring Equinox) — March 20–21: Azerbaijan's most important national celebration. Fire-jumping, street performances, special foods, and the country at its most festive. Unmissable if you can time your visit.
  • Baku City Circuit — Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix — April/May: One of the most spectacular F1 street circuits in the world. Hotels sell out — book well ahead.
  • Gabala International Music Festival — July: Two weeks of world-class classical music in mountain settings. Tickets can be purchased at the venue.
  • Guba Pomegranate Festival — October: Annual harvest festival celebrating Guba's famous pomegranate crop. Food, music, and local crafts.
  • Baku Jazz Festival — October: Annual international jazz festival held in Baku.
  • Shahdag Ski Season Opening — December: First snowfall and resort opening. A local event but atmospheric for visitors.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Azerbaijan?+
May is the single best month — perfect temperatures everywhere (20–26°C in Baku), green mountain landscapes, full waterfalls, and few crowds. April and June are close seconds. Autumn (September–October) is equally excellent for different reasons — golden forests, harvest festivals, and comfortable temperatures.
Is Azerbaijan hot in summer?+
Baku in summer (July–August) is hot — typically 32–38°C. The mountain destinations (Gabala, Guba, Shahdag) are wonderfully cool at the same time, averaging 18–25°C. Summer is the best time for mountain tourism in Azerbaijan even if the capital is less comfortable.
When is it cheapest to visit Azerbaijan?+
The cheapest time is winter (December–February). Hotels are at lowest prices, flights are cheaper, and tourist sites are crowd-free. Baku's mild winter (5–12°C) is comfortable for sightseeing. The exception is the Shahdag ski area, which is expensive and busy during ski season.
What is the weather like in Baku in March?+
March in Baku brings the beginning of spring — temperatures 8–16°C, occasional showers but increasingly sunny days. The Novruz spring equinox festival (March 20–21) is celebrated across the country with fire-jumping and festivities. One of the best times to experience Azerbaijani culture.
Does Azerbaijan get snow?+
Baku rarely sees snow (a few days per year at most). The mountain regions — Gabala, Guba, and Shahdag — receive significant snowfall from December to March, enabling skiing at Shahdag Mountain Resort. The Shaki area gets occasional light snow in December–January.
